Pen & Ink Works by Kirsten Shelton
Kirsten Shelton illustrates the natural world through a detailed lens, finding interest in the textures, and seemingly infinite subtleties, that surround her in Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest. Through pen and ink, Kirsten details the flora under our feet, the matrix of moss and tree limbs above our heads, animal docents (porcupines, otters, bears, bees, and others) who see us (and we sometimes glimpse as well), and other subtleties in the local landscape.
Born and raised in Juneau, Kirsten studied and practiced drawing, painting, and other forms of creativity throughout her school years in Juneau. She continued to study art at Amherst College in Massachusetts. After attending graduate school at Duke University, Kirsten returned to Juneau each summer with her daughters. She now resides permanently in Juneau where she is inspired by the wonder with which her two daughters explore their home's trails, forests, and beaches. She produces original works for exhibit and illustrates books and other publications.
